چکیده

2014 We report results of light scattering study of interactions in a mixture of a surfactantstabilized colloid and hydrogenated polyisoprene polymer. With a virial expansion the smallangle scattering intensity from the mixture is calculated as a function of colloid and polymer concentrations. Using the obtained formula we measured the mutual excluded volume between a polymer molecule and a colloidal particle, and extracted the second virial coefficient of the colloidal particles in the dilute polymer solution. This scheme of obtaining interaction parameters in the polymer-colloid mixture is capable of probing the changes of the interaction potential for the colloidal suspension due to the addition of free polymer, the so-called depletion effect. Weakly Interacting Colloid Polymer Mixtures

This thesis explores the physics of weakly interacting colloid-polymer mixtures. Colloid-polymer mixtures can consist of two kinds of interactions; depletion and adsorption. Both interactions can lead to colloidal aggregation and formation of space spanning gels that can bear stress. Depending on the range of the attractive interaction, depletion gels bear stress by two mechanisms; bond-stretch...

A density–functional study of interfacial properties of colloid–polymer mixtures∗

Abstract Interfacial properties of colloid–polymer mixtures are examined within an effective one– component representation, where the polymer degrees of freedom are traced out, leaving a fluid of colloidal particles interacting via polymer–induced depletion forces. Restriction is made to zero, one and two–body effective potentials, and a free energy functional is used which treats colloid exclu...

Effect of polymer–polymer interactions on the surface tension of colloid–polymer mixtures

The density profile and surface tension for the interface of phase-separated colloid–polymer mixtures have been studied in the framework of the square gradient approximation for both ideal and interacting polymers in good solvent. The calculations show that in the presence of polymer– polymer excluded volume interactions the interfaces have lower widths and surface tensions compared to the case...

Gelation in Model Colloid-Polymer Mixtures

Mode coupling theory (MCT) is used to model gel formation in mixtures of colloidal particles and nonadsorbing polymer. The polymer induces an effective, short-range attraction among the colloids, which is modeled by a depletion attraction of the Asakura-Oosawa form. This enables the MCT to be solved analytically for dilute systems, leading to a prediction, free of adjustable parameters, of the ...

Colloid-polymer mixtures in the protein limit.

We computed the phase-separation behavior and effective interactions of colloid-polymer mixtures in the "protein limit," where the polymer radius of gyration is much larger than the colloid radius. For ideal polymers, the critical colloidal packing fraction tends to zero, whereas for interacting polymers in a good solvent the behavior is governed by a universal binodal, implying a constant crit...
